The Problem

Preply is a tutoring marketplace for language learning. In early 2021, they raised Series B funding to evolve their offerings and expand their global reach. We began our partnership in mid-2021.

Because this ed-tech startup was competing with established brands like Duolingo and Babbel, we knew that building authority and brand recognition was key.

The Strategy

High-authority links were required to help Preply reach their growth goals. We implemented an aggressive Digital PR strategy to increase Preply’s visibility and traffic. This strategy allowed us to leverage unique data to position Preply as a thought leader and earn top-tier placements.

However, the linguistic space is full of academic studies, so we had to come up with unique ideas related to language and culture that didn’t overlap with scholarly data.

Because of the volume of posts we created, we couldn’t rely on a single outreach method (e.g. local news or radio) that repeatedly targeted the same prospects. We thoughtfully diversified the topics to broaden the outreach markets and increase link potential.

Our efforts generated over 100 quality links per month, on average.

Our process with them is usually super fluent, with no stops. We trust them to create ideas autonomously, and they add value by thinking outside the box about different ways of talking about online learning and education. While we work with a lot of agencies doing similar work, North Star Inbound is our biggest and most important agency due to their offering.

The Results

We generated over 4,000 links in 20 months. One hundred seventy-three links were Domain Authority 90+ and 25% of the links we earned were Domain Authority 75+.

Our work landed Preply multiple dream placements including the Wall Street Journal, BBC, USA Today, Bloomberg, NPR, and The Independent. These quality links helped boost the site’s Domain Rating from 77 to 80.

The improved authority and strategic internal linking led to a 41% increase in organic traffic in 20 months. Preply was able to surpass Babbel’s and Duolingo’s traffic.
